Pallas' Cat Kittens Born at the Red River Zoo

The Red River Zoo is proud to announce the birth of five healthy Pallas’ cat kittens born on June 11, 2010. The Red River Zoo is currently the only zoo in North America to produce a litter of kittens this year. Their two year old mother, Elvira, arrived at the Red River Zoo in June of 2009. Being a first time mom, she and the kittens were closely monitored by zoo staff throughout the first six weeks. She has proven to be an excellent mother, and all five kittens are doing great.  The kittens, two girls and three boys, were first seen peeking out of their nest-box at five weeks.  By six weeks, they began venturing out with their mother close behind, bringing them back by the scruff of their neck.  Now they are out romping, pouncing and climbing everywhere.

Pallas’ cats have proven to be extremely difficult to breed in captivity due to a parasite, known as toxoplasmosis, which adult cats can carry with no harm to them. The parasite can be transferred to the kittens, so the mortality rate is high due to their underdeveloped immune systems at birth.  Unfortunately, last year none of the kittens born in zoos survived.

Pallas’ cats are a threatened species found in the colder mountainous regions of Mongolia and the Tibetan Plateau. This species is of special concern and is listed on the AZA’s Population Management Plan, also know as a PMP.  This program includes breeding and transfer recommendations that identify population management goals and recommendations that will ensure the sustainability of a healthy, genetically diverse, and demographically varied Pallas’ cat population.

The Pallas’ cat kittens can be seen daily at the Red River Zoo from 10am-7pm.
Don’t miss these very special babies!
