NEW ARRIVALS
RARE PERSIAN ONAGER, Equus onager onager
- Male Persian Onager was born at approximately 2:00pm on Monday, June 25th.
- This birth marks the third Onager foal born at the Red River Zoo.
- The mother, Annie, came to the Red River Zoo in 2000 from the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
- The healthy foal is approximately 25-30 pounds and nursing well.
- Annie is very protective and has proven to be an excellent mother.
- Persian Onagers are a critically endangered species found in northeastern Iran.
- There are currently less than 500 Persian Onagers left in the wild. The two remaining populations are found in the Touran Protected Area.
- Poaching, competition with domestic animals and habitat loss are the main threats to the two remaining populations.
- There are currently only 24 Persian Onagers in 5 North American zoos.
- Mother and foal will make their debut to zoo visitors on Thursday, July 12th for a sneak peek from 10am to 1pm.
NAMING CONTEST
- Submit your favorite name for the new baby in the Wild Things Gift Shop. Winner will receive a $50 level complimentary Share-the-Care of the baby Onager for one year. Prize includes a personalized certificate, trading card and magnet featuring the Onager foal.
- Winning name will be announced on Thursday, July 12th at 11:00am during his debut and introduction to Red River Zoo visitors.
